UNDERSTANDING GENRES (Blog #1)

Updated: Apr 17, 2018

Genre: essentially a composition’s category. Genres are used to organize pieces of work into categories, which are dependent on their theme, message, and style. If one were to think about it, everything in the world is categorized – careers, likes, dislikes, colors, animals, and literature too. A composition’s genre is mostly chosen dependent on the author’s writing style, topic, and their overall goal that they are trying to achieve in the piece, which is also known as rhetoric. When reading a piece, the reader should be able to acknowledge the writer’s goal. Conversely, when a writer begins to compose their piece, they must keep in mind that they must write their piece with a purpose. If the writer fails to do this, the piece will lose its strength and value and the reader will most likely lose interest. When an author is writing, they must make sure that they either stay focused on their message they are trying to relay, or at least come full circle by the end of the work. In life, one must do the same. Genres and conveying one’s message is not only crucial in literature, but it is also essential in day to day life.
